About Tom Cilmi
Elected to his first term as a Suffolk County Legislator on November 3, 2009, Legislator Tom Cilmi has roots in both County government and in private business. Residents of the Town of Islip since 1989, he and his wife Anna live in Bay Shore.
Tom and Anna Cilmi have two adult children, Stefanie and Thomas. He is a graduate of West Babylon Public Schools (1982) and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the New York Institute of Technology (1986).
Prior to his election, Tom worked in the record business, then in digital publishing. He worked for three years as an aide to a former County Legislator and owned a small commercial printing company for fifteen years which he sold after his election.
Tom served on the Islip Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for about ten years and as President in 2001 and 2002 and again in 2007 and 2008.
Tom was elected to the Board of Directors of the East Islip Soccer Club in 2001, where he coached both of his children’s soccer teams. He served as President of the Club from 2005 through 2008. In addition to coaching soccer, Tom coached for St. Mary’s CYO Basketball, where he was also a Board member.
Tom also helped develop the first ever Catholic Middle Schools Athletic Association soccer program. Today, the CMSAA is a thriving organization affording children who attend Catholic middle schools the opportunity to play sports like their public school counterparts. Today, many of the area’s Catholic schools participate in this league in a variety of sports including soccer, track and field, baseball, softball and basketball.
Legislator Cilmi, now in his 5th term, is the Republican Minority Leader and serves on the following legislative committees: Environment, Planning & Agriculture; Public Works, Transportation & Energy; and Seniors & Consumer Protection.
