April 19, 2019 – Legislator Tom Cilmi joined Legislator Susan Berland and County Executive Steve Bellone to declare April 16, 2019 “Education and Sharing Day” in Suffolk County.
Cilmi sponsored the resolution at the request of Rabbi Shimon Stillerman, Director of Chabad of Islip. In celebration of the birthday of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, Education and Sharing Day is commemorated by national proclamation each year on the 11th day of the month of Nisan on the Jewish calendar. The day recognizes the Rebbe’s lasting efforts to improve the world through a holistic approach to education, which recognizes the importance of spirituality and morality.
In the Rebbe’s words, the goal of Education and Sharing Day is to “Put greater emphasis on the promotion of fundamental human rights and obligations of justice and morality, which are the basis of any human society, if it is to be truly human and not turn into a jungle.”
At a bill-signing attended by Rabbis from across Suffolk County, Cilmi said, “I have always believed, as I think the Rebbe did, that faith and spirituality are integral to who we are as a nation. Education should not just be about academics, but about building good people who understand and respect one another. The teachings of Rabbi Schneerson are alive today, but clearly we have much more to do.”
“I was proud to co-sponsor ‘Education and Sharing Day’ in Suffolk County in honor of Rabbi Menachem Schneerson. Rabbi Schneerson, of righteous memory, emphasized the importance of education and good character through his life’s work,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “April 16, 2019 will be a day to celebrate these lessons and to dedicate ourselves to teaching our children the importance of building their moral character by focusing on our spiritual education in addition to our academic education.”
County Executive Bellone said, “We are focused on building a better, stronger, more moral world and empowering our young ones through education. I am proud to dedicate April 16th as Education and Sharing Day in honor of the life’s work of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson and I want to thank all my colleagues in the legislature for their leadership in helping to honor his legacy.”
Rabbi Shimon Stillerman said, “The Rebbe recognized that access to education, together with moral and spiritual development, can transform the world for good, and he devoted his life to these principals. Thanks to his drive and vision, there are twenty Chabad educational centers in Suffolk County alone.”
