(November 7, 2017 – Bay Shore, NY) Legislator Tom Cilmi, his wife Anna and son Tom joined friends, volunteers and fellow candidates at Islip GOP Headquarters to watch the election results come in.
When the dust cleared, Cilmi had picked up his fifth consecutive electoral victory, winning with over 69% of the vote over Islip Democrat Joseph Tronolone. Cilmi credited support from family and friends, his staff and students from Islip and East Islip high schools who volunteered for the campaign. He also thanked the various political committees for their support. (Cilmi was endorsed by the Republican, Conservative, Independence, Libertarian and Reform parties.)
In other election news, Republican Steve Flotteron, who survived a primary challenge, succeeded in his first bid for the Suffolk Legislature in the 11th District, replacing termed out Republican Tom Barraga and besting Brightwaters Mayor Joe McDermott. Anthony Piccirillo fell just shy of defeating incumbent Democrat William Lindsay III in the 8th LD and Republican Doug King fell short in his first run against incumbent Monica Martinez.
Republicans did manage to pick up one additional seat bringing their caucus to seven members. Republican Rudy Sunderman defeated Josh Slaughter in a race for an open seat in Legislative District 3.
